How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: PASS Method Step by Step

Use it only on small fires, with an exit behind you.

You may own a fire extinguisher at home and still freeze when you need it. Most house fires in India start small: an overloaded plug point, a gas leak near the stove or a pan of oil left on the flame. In the first minute, knowing how to use it decides whether a fire stays a scare or becomes a disaster. This guide shows how to use a fire extinguisher at home with the four-step PASS method, which takes a few minutes to learn. Read it once now, with everyone at home.

Before you use it: check these 3 things

All home fire equipment is designed for small, early-stage fires. Before you pick up the extinguisher, check:

  1. The fire is small. If the flames are bigger than a wastebasket, are reaching the ceiling, or are spreading, leave immediately.
  2. Your exit is behind you. Keep an unblocked escape path at your back at all times.
  3. The smoke is not thick. If thick smoke fills the room or your way out could be cut off, get out.

If any answer is no, evacuate everyone, close doors behind you and call 101 (fire) or 112 (emergency). Never risk a life to save property.

How to use a fire extinguisher: the PASS method

First, shout to alert everyone in the house and call 101. Then take the extinguisher off its bracket and stand 3 to 4 metres from the fire, with your back to an open exit.

Step 1: P – Pull the pin

Firmly pull the metal ring pin straight out. This breaks the plastic tamper seal and unlocks the operating lever.

Step 2: A – Aim low at the base

Aim the nozzle low, at the base of the fire where the fuel is burning. Do not aim at the smoke or the leaping flames.

Step 3: S – Squeeze the lever

Squeeze the lever steadily. This releases the pressurised dry chemical powder in a continuous stream.

Step 4: S – Sweep side to side

Sweep the nozzle back and forth across the base of the burning fuel until the flames are fully out.

Remember the time limit. A 2 kg ABC extinguisher discharges for only about 10 to 12 seconds, with a throw of about 3 to 4 metres. Aim before you squeeze, so you don’t waste any powder.

Which fires can a home extinguisher put out?

The 2 kg ABC dry powder extinguisher is the recommended fire extinguisher for home use in most Indian homes.

Fire type Examples Use the ABC extinguisher?
Class A: solids Wood, cloth, paper, curtains, furniture Yes
Class B: flammable liquids Petrol, paint, thinners Yes
Class C: flammable gases LPG Yes
Electrical equipment Wiring, appliances, inverter Yes
Burning cooking oil in a pan or kadhai Kitchen pan fire No: powder cannot cool hot oil, so it can flare up again and the spray can scatter burning oil. Use a fire blanket.

For a burning pan, pull the fire blanket tapes down, shield your hands behind the fabric, lay it gently over the pan and turn off the gas. Leave the blanket in place until it cools. Never pour water on burning oil, and never use water on an electrical fire.

Common mistakes when using a fire extinguisher at home

  • Aiming at the flames or smoke. Aim low at the base, where the fuel is burning.
  • Standing with no way out. Always keep your back to an open exit.
  • Fighting a spreading fire. If the flames are bigger than a wastebasket, leave.
  • Using water on oil or electrical fires. Water on burning oil causes a violent flare-up, and water conducts electricity.
  • Using the lift. Electrical failure can trap you. Always use the stairs.
  • Going back inside. Once you are out, never re-enter a burning building.
  • Putting a used extinguisher back on the wall. Even a partial discharge needs immediate professional recharging.

If the extinguisher feels too heavy

The right size is the one the person using it can lift off the bracket with one hand. The 2 kg unit is light enough for most adults to lift, aim and carry quickly. For elders, teenagers or anyone who isn’t confident using an extinguisher, the Graha Kavach fire ball can also be rolled or tossed into the base of a fire from 5 to 7 metres away. It activates in 3 to 5 seconds when it touches the flame.

After using the extinguisher

  1. Check for smouldering: make sure embers inside mattresses, cushions or wood trim are not still burning.
  2. Open windows only after the fire department confirms the fire is fully out.
  3. Have the extinguisher professionally recharged, even after a short burst.
  4. If you used the fire blanket, replace it; it is a single-use item.

Keep it ready to use

  • Check the pressure gauge once a month; the needle should be in the green zone. If it drops into the red zone, have it serviced immediately.
  • Check that the pin, hose and nozzle are intact and the body has no rust or dents.
  • Keep it on its bracket near an exit, visible and unblocked. See where to keep a fire extinguisher at home for the best spots and mounting height.
  • Go through PASS once with everyone at home, including elders and domestic help.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. How do you use a fire extinguisher at home?

Use the PASS method. Pull the safety pin, aim the nozzle low at the base of the fire, squeeze the lever steadily and sweep side to side until the fire is out. Stand 3 to 4 metres away with a clear exit behind you, and use it only on small, early-stage fires.

Q2. What does PASS stand for?

PASS stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. Pull the pin to unlock the lever, aim low at the base of the fire, squeeze the lever to release the powder and sweep the nozzle side to side across the burning fuel. It is the standard four-step way to use a portable extinguisher.

Q3. How far should you stand from a fire when using an extinguisher?

Stand about 3 to 4 metres from the fire. A 2 kg ABC extinguisher throws powder about 3 to 4 metres, so you can reach the base of the fire from a safe distance. Always keep an open exit behind you, so you can leave if the fire grows.

Q4. How long does a 2 kg fire extinguisher last when used?

A 2 kg ABC fire extinguisher discharges for about 10 to 12 seconds. That is enough for a small fire if you aim at the base before squeezing. Because the discharge is short, it is meant only for early-stage fires. If the fire is still burning when it runs out, leave and call 101.

Q5. Can I use a fire extinguisher on a kitchen oil fire?

An ABC powder extinguisher is not the best choice for a burning pan of oil. Powder cannot cool hot oil, so the flame can flare up again, and the spray can scatter burning oil. Smother the pan with a fire blanket, turn off the gas, and never use water.

Q6. When should you not use a fire extinguisher?

Do not fight the fire if it is bigger than a wastebasket, is spreading, has reached the ceiling, or is producing thick smoke, or if your exit could be cut off. In these cases, alert everyone, leave immediately, close doors behind you and call 101 or 112.

Q7. What should I do after using a fire extinguisher?

Check that nothing is still smouldering, and open windows only after the fire department confirms the fire is out. Have the extinguisher professionally recharged, even after a partial discharge, because a part-used cylinder loses pressure. Check the gauge every month so it is ready next time.
