Where to Keep a Fire Extinguisher at Home: Best Spots & Mounting Tips

Most home fires in India start in a few predictable places: the kitchen stove, the MCB panel, an overloaded extension board or the inverter cupboard. Equipment that cannot be reached in an emergency is useless, so where you keep a fire extinguisher at home matters as much as which one you buy. This guide covers the best spots, the right mounting height, the places to avoid, and where the fire blanket and fire ball should go.

Keep your fire extinguisher at home on a wall bracket in the main corridor or hallway, on the way to the main door, 1.0 to 1.5 metres above the floor. Keep it visible and unblocked, never inside a cupboard or right beside the stove. Mount the fire blanket on the kitchen wall near the kitchen exit, and the fire ball about 30 cm above the MCB panel, LPG cylinder or inverter.

The golden rule: keep it on your way out

Good fire extinguisher placement follows how your family moves, not where the hazard is. Keep the extinguisher near an exit, so you always fight a fire with your back to safety. To grab it, you should move toward safety, never deeper into danger.

The rule is simple: never place a device where reaching it would put you between the fire and the exit.

Best spots for a fire extinguisher at home

1. Main corridor or hallway, near the main door

This is the best spot for your fire extinguisher for home use. Fix the 2 kg ABC fire extinguisher for home on its bracket in the corridor or living area, on the route to the main door, where everyone can see it on their daily routes.

2. Near the kitchen door, not beside the stove

Kitchen fire extinguishers belong near the kitchen door, not right above the stove. If a fire starts at the burner, you do not want to reach through flames to get to your extinguisher. A small fire extinguisher for kitchen use, about 1 to 2 kg of dry powder, is usually enough for a first response.

3. Near the bedrooms, in larger flats

In a 2 or 3 BHK flat where the bedrooms are far from the main corridor, add a second extinguisher near the bedrooms.

4. On every floor

Fire safety bodies commonly advise at least one extinguisher on every floor. If you are planning a fire extinguisher for a house with more than one floor, such as a duplex or independent house, plan for one kit per floor.

Places to avoid

Avoid Why
Right beside or above the stove A unit next to the stove may be unreachable once flames start
Inside deep cupboards or behind heavy furniture Hidden equipment is easy to forget and slow to reach
Behind a door It is out of sight when you need it
In direct sunlight or a damp spot Heat and moisture should be kept away from the cylinder
Where things get piled in front It must stay unblocked; a cupboard behind the atta tin is not the place

How high to mount a home extinguisher

Mount the wall bracket 1.0 to 1.5 metres above floor level, so the handle sits at around chest height. At that height, most adults can lift a home extinguisher off the bracket quickly without stretching.

A wall bracket keeps the extinguisher visible and upright. An extinguisher lying in a cupboard is easy to forget. The Graha Kavach fire safety kit for home comes with an extinguisher wall bracket, a fire-ball wall stand, 5 screws and 5 wall plugs, so you can mount everything the day it arrives.

Mounting checklist:

  1. Choose a spot that is easy to reach while moving out of the room.
  2. Fix the extinguisher bracket to the wall at a reachable height (1.0–1.5 m).
  3. Fix the fire-ball stand near the risk point you want covered.
  4. Hang the fire blanket in the kitchen with the pull tapes hanging downward.
  5. Make sure everyone at home knows where all three are kept.

Where to keep the fire blanket

A household fire extinguisher is not the right tool for a burning pan of oil, which is why the kitchen needs a fire blanket.

  • Mount it on the kitchen wall at eye level, about 1.5 metres from the floor, near the kitchen exit door.
  • Keep it at least 2 metres from the stove, so you can reach it without leaning over the flames.
  • Make sure the black pull tapes hang freely downward at all times.
  • Tell every household member and any cook or domestic help where it is.

Where to keep the fire ball

The automatic fire ball works even when no one is at home. Its place is above the risk point, not on your exit route.

  • Fix its metal cradle about 30 cm above the LPG cylinder, the MCB panel or the inverter battery.
  • Make sure nothing blocks its 360° spread.
  • Do not install it directly above open cooktop burners.
  • If your LPG cylinder, inverter or store room is away from the MCB panel, consider a second fire ball there.

See how the ball reacts in our how it works guide.

Room-by-room summary

Area What to keep there Where exactly
Main corridor or living area 2 kg ABC fire extinguisher On its bracket, on the route to the main door, 1.0–1.5 m high
Kitchen Fire blanket Kitchen wall near the exit, about 1.5 m high, at least 2 m from the stove
MCB or distribution board Fire ball About 30 cm above the panel
LPG cylinder, inverter or store room Fire ball (second unit if away from the panel) About 30 cm above the hazard
Bedrooms in larger flats Second extinguisher Near the bedrooms, if they are far from the corridor

Small flats and rented homes

You don’t need a large home to set this up. The 2 kg extinguisher and the fire blanket fit on a kitchen or hallway wall, and the fire ball mounts above the MCB panel or inverter. Because screws and wall plugs come in the box, it suits a small flat or a rented home. One kit usually covers a 2 BHK: the extinguisher in the corridor, the fire ball near the MCB and the blanket near the kitchen.

Keep it ready after you mount it

  • Check the pressure gauge once a month; the needle should be in the green zone.
  • Make sure the extinguisher, blanket and fire ball are still visible and unblocked.
  • Make sure everyone, including elders and domestic help, knows the PASS method: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep, standing 3 to 4 metres from the fire with an exit behind you.
  • Use the equipment only on a small, early-stage fire. If the fire is spreading or smoke is building, leave immediately and call 101.
